Dr. Krzysztof Sośnica is a professor at the Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences (UPWr.). He obtained a Ph.D. degree in physics and astronomy on April 7, 2014, at the Faculty of Sciences (Philosophisch-naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät) of the University of Bern (Universität Bern) in Switzerland on the basis of the dissertation "Determination of Precise Satellite Orbits and Geodetic parameters using Satellite Laser Ranging." He obtained the habilitation – the second doctorate in technical sciences in the discipline geodesy and cartography on January 27, 2016, at the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Geodesy at the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences. His research is focused on the integration of satellite laser ranging (SLR) and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) observations, and the improvement of methods for determining global geodetic parameters based on multi-GNSS and SLR data. He works on the integration of laser observations to passive geodetic satellites (LAGEOS-1/2, LARES) and active navigation satellites (GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS, GPS) which enables determination of global geodetic parameters such as: geocenter coordinates, pole coordinates, length-of-day excess and the scale of the reference frames using co-location onboard satellites. Currently, he is developing methods for integrating laser observations into altimetric, remote sensing, and gravimetric satellites (Sentinel-3A / 3B, Jason-2/3, GRACE-FO, SWARM-A / B / C). His scientific interests also include determining the orbits of artificial Earth satellites with the highest accuracy to estimate global geodetic parameters describing the geometry, gravitational field, and orientation of the Earth's figure in space, as well as verifying relativistic effects.
Dr. Krzysztof Sośnica manages the project financed by the European Space Agency (ESA), two projects of the OPUS National Science Center, research tasks in two European Union projects (Operational Program Intelligent Development - European Plate Observation System EPOS-PL and EPOS-PL +) and supervises Preludium projects. He was also a contractor in three projects financed from ESA and one of the European Union funds (Horizon 2020), the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Foundation for Polish Science, and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
Krzysztof Sośnica is a member of the Governing Board Member of the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS) and chairman of the JSG 0.14 working group of the International Association of Geodesy. He is also the President of the Discipline Council for Civil Engineering and Transport at UPWr. Krzysztof Sośnica was a panelist of the National Science Center in the OPUS, Preludium, Sonata (Earth Sciences panel, ST10), and Sonata BIS (panel of Physical and Engineering Sciences, ST) competitions. He made reviews of scientific projects for the National Center for Research and Development, the National Science Center and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in Poland (Iuventus Plus, Diamond Grant). He evaluated scientific projects commissioned by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and the Latvian Science Council (Latvijas Zinātnes Padome). He has made over 100 article reviews in JCR journals. He collaborates with the combination center of the International GNSS Service (IGS) in Australia in terms of the validation of the experimental products of the Galileo, BeiDou and QZSS combined orbits. He also cooperates with the German Space Agency (DLR), the French Space Agency (CNES), the University of Bern (AIUB), the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, The University of Texas at Austin and other research centers, which results in numerous joint publications.
Krzysztof Sośnica was the supervisor of one doctoral thesis, which ended with the award of the academic degree of doctor (Kamil Kaźmierski, Ph.D.) and is currently the supervisor in four doctoral dissertations (Grzegorz Bury, Mateusz Drożdżewski, Radosław Zajdel, Dariusz Strugarek). He took part in five habilitation proceedings (twice as a reviewer, twice as a secretary and member of the commission) and in two doctoral dissertations as a reviewer in Poland and Switzerland. He looked after three Ph.D. students from Austria and China during internships. He is the supervisor of the Student Geodetic Scientific Society at UPWr. He has developed a study program for the specialty of satellite geodesy in the field of geodesy and cartography and currently serves as the head of the specialty.
Krzysztof Sośnica was a member of the scientific committees of international conferences, including International Association of Geodesy IX Hotine-Marussi Symposium at the University of Rome "La Sapienza"; he conducted scientific sessions, among others at EGU2018 and EGU2019 (Vienna, Austria), at the 3rd International Conference on GPS Radio Occultation (Taipei, Taiwan), and at the 21st International Workshop on Laser Ranging (Canberra, Australia). He gave a total of 38 talks at international conferences and symposia, of which 5 were invited. He was also the author and co-author of 55 posters presented at conferences and the author and co-author of 61 papers presented by other co-authors. He served as secretary on the organizing committees of two international conferences: IAG Commission 4 Symposium in Wrocław and EUREF 2017 Symposium in Wroclaw.
The research of Krzysztof Sośnica is widely awarded in national and international forums. He was awarded the European Geosciences Union, Outstanding Young Scientist Award 2015, Vienna, Austria, the International Association of Geodesy Award for the best article of the young author in the Journal of Geodesy (Young Authors Award 2013 ), scholarship for outstanding young scientists of the Minister of Science and Higher Education (2015-2018), increased FNP START scholarship 2016 for 1 of the 3 best young scientists in Poland of the Foundation for Polish Science, the award "30 Creative of Wrocław", the award of the European Space Agency (ETH Zurich, Switzerland 2019) and the Excellent Reviewer Award 2018 in Earth, Planets and Space (Springer).
